I almost canceled this trip.

Prior to arrival, a series of assumptions and communication challenges left me questioning whether Palmaïa would actually be the right fit. At several points, I felt my questions were being interpreted differently than I intended, and I genuinely wasn't sure the experience would align with what I was seeking.

Instead of canceling, I decided to experience Palmaïa firsthand and evaluate it based on the stay itself rather than the planning process.

I'm grateful I did.

Palmaïa offers a distinctly different kind of resort experience. If you're looking for nightlife, loud entertainment, or a traditional all-inclusive, this probably isn't your place. If you're looking for a wellness retreat centered around nature, movement, stillness, community, and restoration, Palmaïa offers something truly special.

One of the things I appreciated most was learning that the resort intentionally limits occupancy. Throughout my stay, I never felt crowded or overwhelmed. I always found space on the beach, around the pools, and throughout the property. At the same time, I naturally found myself seeing many of the same people throughout the week in classes and at meals, creating an authentic sense of community without sacrificing privacy or autonomy.

The wellness programming is what truly distinguishes Palmaïa.

I've experienced wellness offerings in many settings over the years, but few have woven them into the overall guest experience as intentionally as Palmaïa has. The classes, ceremonies, facilitators, and overall philosophy work together to create an immersive experience that feels authentic rather than performative.

I particularly loved the Ritual Deck and would have enjoyed seeing even more classes held there because the setting itself creates such a beautiful atmosphere.

I would also love to see another yoga class later in the afternoon or an additional pranayama or breathwork class. I think guests who come specifically for wellness would absolutely embrace those additions.

I'm also excited to see some of the new developments currently underway, particularly the mangrove experience.

One experience I especially enjoyed was the evening DJ sessions. I was honestly surprised more guests didn't attend because they created such a wonderful atmosphere and clearly required a tremendous amount of creativity and intention. The food exceeded my expectations in many ways.

The quality of the ingredients is exceptional, and that matters to me more than almost anything else. Throughout the resort, you can tell there is genuine thought put into sourcing, presentation, and creating meals that feel nourishing rather than simply indulgent.

Where I think there is still room for refinement is in flavor. While some dishes were absolutely outstanding, others—particularly lunch and dinner at Su Casa—sometimes felt like they were missing that final layer of seasoning or balance that would elevate them from very good to unforgettable. Interestingly, I consistently found breakfast at Su Casa to be exceptional.

The dessert menus felt similar. Beautiful presentation throughout the resort, but I often wished for a little more excitement and depth of flavor to match the artistry.

The gym deserves special mention because it's another area where the overall philosophy shines.

I absolutely loved the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the jungle. It never felt like exercising inside a hotel gym—it felt connected to the surrounding environment, which made it one of my favorite places to work out.

As someone who takes wellness seriously, I also noticed that many other guests made regular use of the gym, even during a quieter time of year. That tells me the fitness space is an important part of the overall Palmaïa experience.

My only suggestion would be to update a portion of the equipment. The multifunction station in the corner seems underutilized and offers somewhat limited functionality. Replacing it with a quality cable/pulley machine, adding a few medicine balls, and perhaps another adjustable bench would make the space significantly more versatile for guests who strength train regularly without requiring much additional space.

One of Palmaïa's greatest strengths is unquestionably its people.

Karen, thank you for your diligence, responsiveness, and genuinely warm heart.

Andreas, your smile alone has the ability to make people feel immediately welcomed and cared for.

Rafael, thank you for your grounded presence and the sincere way you wanted every guest to feel loved and genuinely cared for throughout their dining experience.

Fernanda, thank you for your intelligence, attentiveness, thoughtful conversations, and willingness to accommodate requests with genuine kindness.

Sergio, your personality is infectious. Thank you for your humor, attentiveness, quick thinking, and the joy you brought to every interaction.

To all of the wonderful women at Plantissa, thank you for your warmth, your stories, your diligence, and the many beautiful conversations we shared.

Jerica, thank you for stepping in when I experienced a few unexpected mishaps and offering whatever you could to make things easier.

Abraham, thank you for all of our conversations, your wonderful personality, and for all the fun we had experimenting with mocktails together. I sincerely hope you continue following the fire we spoke about.

Finally, I believe Palmaïa's greatest opportunity for improvement lies in the communication surrounding the guest journey before arrival and after departure.

Although my stay itself was overwhelmingly positive, I continued to experience situations where relatively straightforward questions required multiple follow-ups or remained unresolved. After returning home, I reached out because I was genuinely considering another stay and wanted to better understand my options as a returning guest. While several members of the team were kind and responsive, the overall communication before and after my stay often felt fragmented, and I was left without the clarity I was hoping for.

I also believe this is especially important for first-time guests. Palmaïa attracts people who tend to be intentional about their health, wellness, and the experiences they choose. Many arrive with thoughtful questions because they're trying to determine whether the resort truly aligns with their values, needs, and expectations. Clear, consistent communication during that stage has the potential to help those guests feel understood, supported, and confident in their decision long before they arrive.

Interestingly, this stood in contrast to my experience while at the resort. During my stay, the on-property team seemed exceptionally well connected. Staff members consistently remembered my preferences, built upon previous conversations, and created a seamless, personalized experience. That continuity was one of Palmaïa's greatest strengths, which made the reservation and post-stay communication feel noticeably different.

As someone who was sincerely interested in returning, that was disappointing because it stood in stark contrast to the exceptional care demonstrated by so many of the people I encountered during my stay.

The people are Palmaïa's greatest asset. My hope is that, over time, the communication surrounding the reservation process and post-stay guest experience comes to reflect the same level of care, thoughtfulness, and excellence that so many individual team members already embody.

Despite that, I left Palmaïa feeling restored.

Very few places genuinely help quiet the nervous system in the way Palmaïa does.

This one has the potential to.

And when the experience before arrival and after departure fully matches the extraordinary care delivered during the stay itself, I truly believe Palmaïa has the potential to become one of the finest wellness resorts in the world.

Perfect retreat in every way. Second visit and it was like coming home. My wife and I are also business partners and this escape meant a lot to us. We just love the location and the setting and the facilities and the restaurants. We love riding the bikes to the restaurants. We love that there is plenty of room for everyone on the beach and everyone has prime views and idyllic cabanas. Palmaia is the perfect setting for us to truly let go and unwind. While at Palmaia take the time to get to know the amazing staff as well. Just great people in every part of the operation. Edgar from the in house reservations was super helpful to work with. Paolo at reception was our angel and so friendly. Starting our day at Plantissa with the very friendly smiles from Elis & Joselyn started our day on a high note every day. Thank you so much. All our dinner servers were great but we need to thank Samuel at Mar de Olivo for taking extra time talking with us. Made for the most special experience of our trip. We love Enrique at Eolo. Best happy hour server ever! Danny and Debbie on the beach are very attentive and it felt like getting served by good friends. Sergio and Charlie's just a neat person to talk with.
