Balaclava

The hotel lies on a private beachfront estate known as Balaclava along Turtle Bay, ideally located between Port Louis (12 km) and Grand Bay (12 km), on the north-west coast, which is known for its good climate. New trunk roads provide easy access to the hotel. Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport is approximately 60 km from the hotel.

This hotel is a luxurious beach resort and spa of the highest international standard, picturesquely framed by a 25-hectare green tropical garden and nature park and flanked by the Indian Ocean. Its remarkable setting overlooks the most enchanting Turtle Bay. The hotel is a perfect blend of tropical and colonial architecture which provides an elegant background for a sophisticated and yet utterly relaxing holiday, thanks to the unequalled multitude of sports and leisure facilities available. Amazing food

The resort is amazing very big and a lot to do. I want to thank chef Kiran Ramkalawon who did everything possible for us on every evening in terms of dining. The food was amazing would definitely recommend the buffet.

Ray on beach side was amazing.

Front desk staff I found unprofessional and not well trained. But you can’t have everything.

Great family resort

We had a wonderful time staying at this resort. We can with family and everyone absolutely loved it. In terms of the buffet here, we made a connection with a specific chef called Chef Kiran who really took care of us and made us tasty food, would definitely recommend speaking to him about on queries of the food.

Great hotel complex with large garden area / beach and excellent service

My daughter (17) and me can overall highly recommend the Maritim Hotel. Of course, there are many other 5 star hotels on the island, but this hotel is an amazing spot with its 25000 square meter ground, welcoming you behind a massive iron gate. The hotel is built basically in an area with old / exisiting trees, which make it feel like an own, authentic botanically garden.

The hotel entrance is welcoming you with a gorgeous view of the bay. We arrived very early and were warmly welcomed by a drink and the possibility to shower/change clothes for the pool. Although the room was not ready, we were offered breakfast and lunch, enjoying the hotel area while waiting for the room.

The deluxe room we ordered was upgraded to a deluxe plus room (#337) and was ready even earlier than originally indicated (3 pm). The room was very spacious with a freestanding bath tub including view in the garden / to the ocean.

The most touching was the friendly, cooperating service, anticipating the needs. This includes the personal from the reception, pool, restaurants and all other areas. The great environment the hotel is in, includes a golf course , mini golf parkour, archery and water sports facilities.

If there would by minor things to optimizes: some amenities should get a little renovation, e.g. showers / water temperature control in the Spa area. Besides this, there was an IT system upgrade (property management) with some impact on the booking/ordering speed ongoing, which should be finished in the next days.

Overall, a great experience, we always felt welcome and the real holiday started from the first minute.

Highlights:

  • great hotel complex with large "original garden and beach
  • excellent service
  • very good food with lots of options (different restaurants)
  • great hotel for couples and families
  • many amenities (e.g. archery, mini golf, golf, kayak, catamaran), many for free

Great stay, strongly recommend. Adriano was the one who made it extra special!

We had a wonderful stay at the Maritim Resort & Spa and would happily recommend it. Overall, the staff were excellent, with just the odd exception. A special mention goes to Jeev and Sarah, who gave us such a warm welcome from the moment we arrived. They were genuinely lovely, incredibly helpful, and made us feel at home straight away. An even bigger thank you to Adriano, who was absolutely incredible throughout our stay. He is a real asset to this hotel. His customer service skills are exceptional: he's polite, kind, attentive, and always went above and beyond to ensure we had everything we needed. Thank you, Adriano, for making our holiday even more special! The only downside was the on-site Pan Asian restaurant. Unfortunately, the food wasn't great, the service was extremely slow, and the staff seemed quite disinterested, which was disappointing compared to the high standards elsewhere in the resort. That said, all of the other on-site restaurants were excellent, offering plenty of choice, delicious food, and great service. Overall, we had a fantastic stay, and thanks to the outstanding hospitality from the majority of the team, we'd definitely consider returning.

TripAdvisor Review
Beautiful resort, chaotic service. Not the five-star experience we expected

We were really looking forward to our stay, but unfortunately it got off to the worst possible start.

While we were at the airport, we were informed there was a problem with our booking. On arrival, the hotel had no record of our reservation, leaving us waiting while staff tried to establish what had happened.

To the hotel’s credit, we were relocated to one of their off-site villas and upgraded from half board to full board. The villa exceeded our expectations. It was spacious, well maintained and the staff were exceptional: warm, welcoming and consistently helpful throughout our stay.

The villa is, however, less convenient than we had been led to believe. We were told a shuttle ran every 20 minutes, but it actually operates on request and can only be booked once the duty manager starts at 8am. The hotel is only a 10 to 15 minute walk away, but it does mean taking everything you need with you for the day.

Our biggest disappointment was the organisation at the main hotel. Every member of staff we encountered was polite and eager to help, but the customer service was best described as chaotic. We were told the hotel had recently introduced a new computer system and, whether that was the cause or not, there appeared to be constant confusion.

The inconsistent information was frustrating. We were quoted three different prices (€80, €65 and €60) to upgrade from full board to include drinks. We then saw a rate card showing €54, only to be told it was last year’s price. We were eventually offered €65 with a discount, but it shouldn’t be so difficult to get a clear answer. We also asked if only the adults could upgrade, as our two teenagers would never have made the package worthwhile, but this wasn’t permitted.

The confusion extended to the restaurants. We arrived for one reservation only to find there was no booking. Another confirmed reservation was cancelled because the restaurant had been overbooked. At another venue we were presented with a bill for more than £200 despite being on full board. The issue was resolved, but it perfectly summed up the lack of organisation.

One restaurant had a single young member of staff trying to welcome guests and serve tables at the same time. She worked incredibly hard, but was clearly overstretched. More generally, many staff appeared to be new and unsure of procedures, reinforcing the impression that the hotel was not operating smoothly.

The resort itself is beautiful, with stunning grounds, and the villa was excellent. Sadly, the service and organisation simply didn’t live up to the five-star setting. If you’re looking for attractive surroundings and comfortable accommodation, you’ll likely enjoy your stay. If you’re expecting the polished, seamless service that normally accompanies a five-star resort, you may come away disappointed.
