A Little Dissapointed

Just spent two weeks at The Angela Hotel. Overall we did enjoy our time there, except for the food. It was hit & miss to be honest we felt. The selection of main courses for dinner was very poor, and not very appetising. Pork seemed to be on the menu quite a lot, and the roast beef was like something you would buy in a deli to make a sandwich. Frozen vegetables didn't impress me either. We believed the mash potato

The dining room reminded me of Woolworths café, or a factory canteen. The noise was unbearable, with chairs being dragged continuously back & forth on the tiles. Food at breakfast was good to be honest, with everthing you could fancy. The lady making the omelettes was exceptionally good at her job, and very pleasant. Please buy some new bowls, noticed that the same old fashioned ones were used for cereals, soup & ice creams. Our junior suite with balcony and a seaview was fantastic. Hotel location is excellent. We loved the spaciousness of our room, the bath in the middle of the room, and the toilet & shower unit which was first class. It was of a very high and comfortable standard, kept spotless clean by the lovely cleaning ladies, with fresh towels and bed linen changed when necessary. The entertainment every night was pretty good. We had our favourites. The pool area was lovely, no issues whatsoever with sun beds no matter time you went there. A Happy Hour at lunctime was welcome too. Some staff were more friendly than others. We did go out for dinner, & did a couple of trips also. We enjoyed Fuengerola and the surrounding area. We would like to return to The Angela Hotel, but a couple of things which we have mentioned would have to be resolved. Here's hoping we will visit again.

Improved, but could be better

This is probably the fourth or fifth time we've stayed at the Angela, so we're able to see the changes good and bad that have happened at the Angela. Overall, the changes were fairly minor apart from the one big change. The food. There used to be a lot of complaints previously about the food, namely the variety and the warmth. I'm happy to say that there has been a massive improvement there and the choice and quality is pretty good. Don't get me wrong, it isn't perfect, but as hotel catering on this scale, there's always something there to eat for even the fussiest of eaters. The removal of the evening happy hour doesn't seem to have affected the number of people visiting the bar in the evening as there's always entertainment. Now, the bad points. The rooms are starting to look a little bit dated and are getting a little rough around the edges. There isn't enough hangers on the hanging rail and there aren't charging points either sides of the bed. Basically, the rooms need a refresh, but the ladies who clean the rooms do an absolutely amazing job. (our main cleaner Alexandra was fantastic) So. Would I return?? Yes, but a little few cosmetic changes would make the experience better. The location of the Angela is what makes it a great choice for many as it's close to many great restaurants, near a Mercadona supermarket and close to transport.

Management take heed, please.

Our 2nd visit to the hotel, which has some lovely hard working staff - apart from one older small woman in the dining room - who kissed and greeted guests who she knew well but was surly & rude to others. She mixed up our drinks order twice. Think she may have been on holiday from 4th Oct -as thankfully didn't see her for next 7 days. Louise, the Tui rep is very helpful & knowledgable. Breakfast great, evening dinner hit & miss, but salads good.

Several issues that we feel need attention from management: The pedal bin in the ladies toilet was broken, in June, reported it then. Reported it again bin replaced but wasn't great quality, as broke again almost immediately, reported again - no action! Our room had several issues, no fridge, just an empty cabinet, until reported. Curtains did not meet, had to peg together, reported, not rectified. The plug in the wash basin was faulty, repaired after 4 requests. Pillows worn out, replaced when reported. Shower rose faulty, replaced. Local people take over the dance floor on Sat & Sun evenings, grabbing lots of seats near the dance floor, often buying just water. Guests unable to find seats.

No water or working toilets for 5 hours on one evening. 1 receptionist kept saying will be fixed in 15 mins. Toilets near the bar blocked up & no means to clean hands.Had to demand hand sanitiser to be supplied in the toilets!

Not a huge issue, but holiday was to celebrate my birthday. In the past a card & bottle of cava brought to the room - this time nada!

Management please take action as you appear to want to ship guests in and out quickly, without ensuring rooms are checked & in full working order.

The Good, The Bad and the Downright Ugly

I'm unsure how many times I have visited this hotel, twice this year and numerous over the previous years.

I love the proximity to the beach, bars, restaurants etc. I think the staff are amazing and they always remember you but there is the good, the bad and the downright ugly in this review.

The Good :

  • I am emailing the hotel direct again the thank staff who's names I noted, but I have yet to find any single staff member that doesn't go above and beyond. A special mention to Claudia from Columbia who diligently cleaned the external smoking area and who always made time for a chat. Javier (Reception), Rafael,Anna, Maria and Sofia (Restaurant), Matias,Veronika,Louis and Louisa (Bar). And to all the other staff I interacted with - yet again, name badges would help. Thank you stars!
  • Thanks to Chef and the hardworking kitchen staff - you have a thankless task but I always found something delicious to eat.

The Bad :

  • Emailing ahead of arrival to request an upgrade but being met with an absolutely chaotic check in and allocated a Floor 1, Street side room. I lasted 3 days before Javier got me a move. It was a good job my 92 year old dad didn't fly (altho he did pay so you made a handsome profit there!) as he wouldn't have managed the bath! Poor form there.
  • At check in being required to complete a written form with my credit card details - this is illegal in the UK, and realising my details were being held in a folder on reception with numerous other guests personal and credit card details I was very concerned about the security of my card and got them removed. This could have been a thieves massive pay day and ripe for fraud!
  • Being lied to in the restaurant. I am used to signing for goods/services in the hotel. On my first evening I was told that due to a computer issue all drinks etc now had to be paid for in cash/by card, this was an obvious lie and made me wonder, did you have a mass of runners who didn't pay, or are you having cash flow problems. My spend went down from an average of over 800 Euros to nearer 300 during my stay. The only winners I saw were the bar staff who generally got to keep the additional 2 Euros when most drinks cost 8.
  • Sadly I had to spend some time round the pool whereas I am usually a beach girl. I'm not sure what the answer is but its downright embarrassing seeing towels on sunbeds from 9am without their owners. I was tempted on my last day to throw all the towels in the pool!

The Downright Ugly :

  • Having no flushing toilets or running water for 6 hours one evening was a disaster in terms of legitimacy for your hotel. All guests should've been notified immediately and plans put in place to ensure there were no risks to health and that strict hygiene protocols were enacted, particularly as it took place over dinner service. Although I cannot pinpoint mine and other guests illness to this incident, a number of us were taken ill with a norovirus approx 4 days later despite my own best efforts to keep my hygiene/handwashing standards high.

On the whole I enjoyed my stay but it will be my last. I now prefer strictly Adults Only hotels (I understand this is not allowed in Spain and you are an Adult recommended), but there are more children now accessing the hotel. I also prefer more of a 5 star experience and for the price I paid here, I can spend the same for a 5 star hotel such as the Ivi Mare in Paphos where I am guaranteed a sunbed with a mattress, tablecloths at dinner service where I am in a restaurant (not what feels to be more of a canteen) alongside a more ambient, chilled stay. Sadly I won't be returning as the cons for me now outweigh the pros. But, thank you for all the happy memories. Joy Flynn

Lovely hotel with just a few issues

We are here now. Our 2nd visit and have booked for next year. Having a lovely relaxing time. Staff can not do enough for you. There are one or two in the restaurant who we found miserable and rude. But after the 1st week we didn't see them again. Housekeeping of our room was clean but having to ask for toilet rolls, milk, sugar almost every day. Food was hit and miss, but on most nights very nice. Breakfast delicious everyday. We've had a norivirus outbreak in the past week. But judging seeing a lot of people not using hand gel entering the restaurant I can see why. People sneezing and coughing into their hands and continuing using the utensils getting their food. We used paper napkins to hold the ladles and spoons to get our food every day. Bought some antibiolgical soap wash for our room, and used hand wipes all the time. You can't always blame the hotel. We come because we like the evening entertainment, but noticed this time people not from our hotel getting best seats and drinking water all night. We don't think that's right as paying guests. Apart from that wedo love it here.
