Holiday from hell. After going last June we were really looking forward to getting back for a 3 night long weekend break. Hotel lovely, location lovely. Staff great. Food really nice (only had breakfast) Completely spoiled by selfish entitled brits (I’m English) treating it like a cheap Benidorm b&b. Hen party, stag party and a group of men there for ‘golfing’, all got together until 4/5am each night, drunk, slamming doors, shouting in the corridors. Then the last night the hotel held a private party - literally the other side of our balcony, 150ish guests left by 11.45, then the scraping of the chairs and all 16 tables to put away along with the stage, lighting and dj set up. Banging, shouting to each other dragging metal. Right outside our balcony until after 1am. When it was set up I asked at the desk how long it’ll be on for, Jesus told us not late, about 9.30. I complained to reception and was given 2 hours later check out. The hotel describes itself “Hotel Alay in Benalmádena invites you to immerse yourself in the peaceful and relaxing atmosphere of its adults-only facilities in the Puerto Marina area”, but fails to mention you have no chance of a peaceful and relaxing time. I’m sure others will disagree and I’m happy for them, but this is how it was for us, now need to find somewhere else in Benalmadena that doesn’t allow groups.
Great location for both beach, Marina, bars and restaurants. Room was basic but clean, could have done with drawers as we felt we were living out our suitcase, a kettle in the room, and possibly a full length mirror but very minor things. Our room overlooked the rooftop pool and also had a side view of the beach. The only negative was that we were directly above the bar, on the main street so could be noisy at night with people coming home. Staff were friendly and worked hard. We had breakfast at the hotel a couple of mornings, but usually headed to the pool bar late morning for a snack which served toasties, wraps, pizza and salads which were lovely, or there was a small bistro across from the hotel which was nice. Directly next to the hotel was a great Italian, if you didn't want to wander far and food was lovely. The pool didnt open until 9.00am and it was cleaned every morning before opening. There was plenty places to sunbathe (roof terrace with shallow pool, grass area below and side area with pool) so never had a problem getting a lounger.
The room didn’t feel properly cleaned. The bedsheets appeared not to have been changed, with the bed simply being made, and there were still visible stains on the bedside table and floor. The bathroom also looked dated and there was very little storage, with no drawers to put your clothes in so we lived out of out suitcase for a week. There was also no mirror in the room apart from the one in the bathroom.
The curtains didn’t fully cover the window, meaning the room was never completely dark. We also found that when closing one side of the sliding door, the other side would open, which was quite frustrating. Noise was another major issue. Our room was directly above the sports bar, so it was very noisy until around 11:30pm–midnight.
On the positive side, the breakfast buffet was nice, and the food, drinks and staff at the Sun & Moon Bar were all lovely and welcoming.
Like many others have said the best thing about this hotel is the location. It couldn’t be much better. Nice lobby and friendly and helpful reception staff in our experience anyway. Same for the pool bar staff. Clean and well maintained pool area though we did spot some cat poo in the grassy area which put us off sitting there. Room was fine except for a dodgy shower head and possibly some drawers. Maid service was very good and we never had a problem. Bit of noise one night from some Spanish guests but that was it. I really don’t get the whole towel hiring thing when you can just bring your own. All in all we had an excellent stay and would gladly return to this hotel.
