A lovely hotel experience - we would stay here again
The Hotel Residence is a lovely hotel and the staff are very willing, approachable and friendly. We did not like our room allocation on our first night (we had booked a holiday there for 10 days on a half-board basis) as our room overlooked the road and was quite noisy when sitting outside on the balcony. So I told them at Reception the next day and they very kindly moved us to another room/apartment which had a lovely garden and sea view and we were very happy.
Relaxing family holiday
Fantastic stay, beautiful gardens, excellent restaurants, friendly staff. Great location a short bus ride into Funchal town. Plenty of local restaurants in vicinity. Good value meals in the hotel’s excellent restaurants. Rooms are well kept and have seen recent refurbishments.

We loved this hotel. I had booked a 1 bedroom suite and they upgraded us to a 2 bedroom which was amazing. The pools, breakfast, location are all super. No complaints at all. I would 100% stay here again.

"The Residence At Portobay" Wonderful
This was one of many stays at "The Residence at Portobay" We all 6 of us as a family enjoyed our stays over the last 15 years so very much at "The Residence". We are coming back. A wonderful location with such Beautiful tropical gardens , Greenery, Herbs, including a Orchid garden under a walkway with a Giant Strelitzia Nicolai Growing above the walkway that we call...."The Runway". You have 5 Pools some under cover & suitable for children & others for adults. The rooms are very clean & comfortable serviced each day, Mattresses & pillows the very best for comfort. The Restaurants are quite varied from the Atlantida Buffet to the "ALFAMA" Al a Carte for special occasions or "IL Basilico" Italian & "Horta" Healthy eating all on site. Through the reception you are able to book Very many trips out at a reasonable price & they have so much local information & can sort almost anything. From The downhill Toboggan run to Levada walks & of course the fantastic gardens on the island. A Real PLUS is a visit to the Laurissilva Forest a rare 20 million year old subtropical Laurel rainforest that covers a Fifth of the Island, we visited & very impressed. While there you must try the "Bolo do Caco" bread, with Garlic Butter on, hot, also try the local drink "PONCHA" made with local sugarcane Rum Honey & Orange Lemon & Juice, Very good made fresh. Well just wish we were still there a second home really.

Very relaxing and a lovely place to visit.
Fantastic holiday as always. Rooms are always kept clean by housekeeping. Lovely friendly staff and a big shout out to Clare and Cindy who always greet you with a smile and are very knowledgeable and helpful. Restaurants are always welcoming and really make a fuss of young children. Location in great, within easy reach of Funchal. That’s the reason we’ve been coming here for the last 12 years.
