- Quinta da Bela Vista
It's surprising the treasures you can unearth when you venture a little further out of Funchal... A little beyond the centre of the cosmopolitan city; beyond the main resorts, is a multi-award winning hotel whose charms will quickly draw you in. This is the Quinta da Bela Vista – a beautiful nineteenth century mansion house.
The Quinta da Bela Vista is a truly discrete haven for the discerning traveller. Full of colonial charm and rich with authentic character, it's the island's most unique five star hotel.
A stay at the Quinta da Bela Vista gives you a richer holiday experience. As well as the views and the people, and the wonderful ambience that's so much a part of a Madeiran holiday, you'll get a little glimpse into a different time.
It's all about the experience. The look of the Quinta da Bela Vista sets the tone. As well as the beautifully appointed rooms and rich furnishings, the hotel is set in manicured lawns and boasts sweeping views out over the Bay. It all feels so picture-postcard perfect.
Naturally that timeless elegance extends to the guests' rooms. Each luxurious garden-view room has its own exquisite marble bathroom – how's that for nineteenth century style? Modern conveniences including cable TV, telephone, safety deposit box, hairdryer, minibar and data port ensure that you're not confined to the past. Balcony rooms are also available at a supplement.
The Quinta da Bela Vista is choc-full of wonderful amenities too. There are three bars and three restaurants to choose from, each with its own distinctive style and feel. There is an excellent gym, with sauna and Jacuzzi, as well as a heated outdoor pool. There's nothing quite like an evening swim under a starry sky. The billiards room is another kiss to the past, while Wi-Fi throughout the hotel brings things bang up-to-date.
You'll experience the best of past and present as you explore Funchal too. The Quinta da Bela Vista is such a perfect stepping stone for any holiday on this island. Madeira's past sits comfortably alongside its present. The capital – Funchal – is the greatest example of that. It's a thriving, vibrant city; a favourite with holidaymakers, and quite removed from its past as a fennel plantation by the sea. But it celebrates that heritage easily.
The Quinta da Bela Vista is one of Madeira's finest five star hotels, but not just because of its old-world style. Its facilities and service standards conform to the very highest modern ideals.
Take advantage of recreational opportunities offered, including an outdoor pool, an outdoor tennis court and a sauna. This Colonial hotel also features complimentary wireless Internet access, concierge services and babysitting. Getting to nearby attractions is a breeze with the complimentary local area shuttle.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
A discreet haven only seven minutes from the centre of Funchal, the Quinta da Bela Vista exudes traditional colonial charm and character. A mansion dating from the 19th century the hotel has won numerous awards and offers a unique and special guest experience. The hotel is surrounded by manicured gardens and enjoys sweeping views of the bay around Funchal. A complimentary bus service operates from the hotel to the centre of Funchal.

This is a beautiful. old fashioned hotel tucked in the hills above Funchal. Its like stepping back in time but yet all modern conveniences are available. The room we had 330 was large and had a balcony. The only slight negatives and this did not in any way ruin our experience - the shower was a little basic and because our room had adjoining doors to the next room you could hear voices more easily. Having said that all guests were quiet and respectful as the majority are older. The breakfast was first class and all the staff were excellent. There was no rushing for sun beds you could take your time and still find plenty available. The pool was lovely. We ate in the Manor House on site and had a delicious meal. There is a shuttle bus down to town on weekdays but we often walked down or got a taxi as they are readily available. I would not trade proximity for another hotel that's for sure :)
Lovely peaceful location. Good choice at breakfast. Mostly good food at dinner, only let down by the meat sometimes being a bit tough. The wine waiter can be a bit officious, and you are charged for water. Shops and buses a short walk away. Staff go out of the way to be friendly and helpful.
Beautiful hotel ( this was our fourth visit). The gardens are stunning and the accommodation lives up to your expectations. The rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable, the gardens are spectacular and the restaurant beautiful. However, what makes the hotel is the staff who, without exception are fabulous. Nothing is too much trouble for any of them, from housekeeping to pool attendants. Special mention has to go to Paula ( reception) and Mr Hilario, Eusabio and Sonia (restaurant), who treat us everytime like long standing friends.
This is a delightful hotel. The rooms are spacious, quiet, comfortable and well equipped. We had 131 - ground floor with juillet balcony looking over the gardens at the tennis court end. The bathroom hah a heated towel rail that was - shock - heated! Hot, powerful shower and twin basins. Would’ve have liked some hair conditioner and separate bottled toiletries, but this is detail.
Staff are outstanding. From reception, through housekeeping to restaurant and all other areas, staff were courteous, welcoming and above all immediately available and helpful. A very nice unsolicited touch was the complementary bottle of fizz left in our room on ice the second night to celebrate our anniversary. Late checkout as standard (midday) and bag storage until airport transfer were welcome too.
Food in the main was excellent. There were some dishes not to our taste, but it was nice to have the opportunity to sample an eclectic mix of Portuguese fish and meat courses. Half board daily dinner was a set 4 course meal, with nothing repeated over 7 days. Breakfast was a sumptuous affair with plenty of hot and cold choices.
The open air pool location and pool bar overlooking Funchal are a haven of peace and quiet. No issues with sun bed hogging - there were always more than enough, and it was never crowded.
The grounds and gardens are beautiful - well landscaped with trees shrubs flowers and ponds. We enjoyed peaceful walks here.
The original Quinta is worth a visit to view the furnishings, antiques and paintings on display.
The free daily shuttle service into Funchal was efficient, although dropping off only at the CR7 museum left a long walk into the centre for the cable car, old town, etc.
Whilst technically, this hotel may lack some of the nit picking points that a modern 5 star hotel has to have, Quinta Da Bela Vista, is a true old fashioned character hotel, worthy of its 5 star designation.
Quinta da Bela Vista is a lovely elegant hotel with great staff, gorgeous gardens and views, a choice of restaurants, a swimming pool and a gym! The double bedroom was spacious and had a balcony out onto the garden. The hotel provides a shuttle bus to and from Funchal throughout the day. This is a luxury hotel but the atmosphere is tranquil and relaxed.
