The only adult property is located at the water's edge with direct access to the sea front promenade. Behind the hotel lies the old centre of Funchal, the well-known "old town". Its close relationship to the sea, the outstanding and exclusive views over the harbour where the cruise ships dock, its picturesque surroundings and the unique flavours of its cuisine result in genuine urban tranquillity. The hotel’s location is fantastic for both the actively inclined and those who would prefer to relax and listen to the breaking of waves. A congenial hotel offering 146 rooms, restaurant, bars with terrace, direct access to the promenade, outdoor pool, indoor pool, SPA, gym and parking, all in the heart of the city.
Due to the surrounding area and the number of steps around the hotel, it may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties.
We had a very nice stay at Porto Bay Santa Maria. We went hiking with Get your guide, who picked us up at the hotel.
We had a great stay at the PortoBay Santa Maria during the Atlantic Festival, taking in the firework display contest which we watched from the hotel. As usual, the breakfast was excellent and the food served by the pool bar was very tasty at a reasonable price. We have already booked to return for two weeks next June.
I enjoyed my stay at the Porto Bay, the hotel was very clean and the staff are polite and efficient. My room was fantastic with a view on the square. I found the drinks expensive and the lack of places to refill my water bottle was a bit harsh. Water service stations are common in most hotels nowadays. The hotel is situated within walking distance of most attractions and there are many eateries nearby. Entertainment is provided in the evening and there is a good selection of programmes on the television. This hotel clientele are mainly the elderly.
A fantastic couple of weeks at this hotel. The location is everything - in the historical old town, on the sea front, easy walk to many restaurants, the market, next to the cable car. Excellent breakfast - continental and English (with HP sauce!). The clientele is more of an older demographic but still families with older ‘children’ and younger couples. Predominately English and German. The manager is very visible and hands on, excellent service. It was our second stay here as the location can’t be bettered!
This is a very well maintained hotel and knows how to please the guests. There was very little to be negative about. Everything thoughtfully presented . Staff were always polite and very attentive. The location is fantastic , especially for the Old Town, but also lots of places are accessible if you like walking. Public transport and taxis are plentiful. Hotel staff were knowledgeable and helpful about travel queries etc Would highly recommend and would return.
