My recent four-night stay at Enotel Magnolia (June 21-25, 2026) in Madeira, Portugal.
Upon arrival, I was assigned a room that was in a shockingly filthy state. This is entirely incompatible with the expected standards of a hotel that advertises itself as a 4‑star establishment. While I greatly appreciate the apology and professionalism of the reception staff who arranged a room change the following day, the fact remains that such a room should never have been offered to a guest in the first place (Room 120).
Throughout my stay, I repeatedly woke up with itchy, irritated areas on my skin resembling insect bites. I initially assumed they were mosquito bites. However, on the morning of my departure, I discovered dark spots on the bed sheet. Using my phone's magnifying feature, I identified what appeared to be a dead insect. I photographed it as evidence. This discovery was extremely disturbing and raises serious concerns about the hygiene and pest-control standards in rooms. No guest should have to question whether their bed is sanitary or whether they are being bitten during the night. This is not a minor inconvenience—it is a health issue.
Given the circumstances, I expected a thorough investigation into this matter and a clear explanation of how such conditions were allowed to occur. I also
shared this incident with the travel agency who booked my stay and requested that they contact the hotel management to voice my concerns and request a compensation/refund. Unfortunately, my travel agency contacted me back with the hotel decision that they do not issue any refunds, compensation or even an apology for this extremely negative experience.
I am attaching photos to substantiate the evidence.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS ESTABLISHMENT!
My husband and I had room 619 for a week. The room was excellent with a great view of the water and generally no hall noise or door slamming as there are only 6 rooms on that level. Also, just down the hall was access to the roof if you cared to go out for some solitude. There was street noise, no doubt. It wasn't an issue during the day, however, there were a few nights where the noise was intolerable between 10pm and 1am. Unfortunately, locals on their motorcycles with loud exhaust like to hammer up the hill next to the hotel. Anyway, I solved the issue with some earplugs and tried to chalk it up to locals having their fun after work. The lobby and pool were a delight and the food (half board) was good most nights with some exceptional thrown in. Hotel staff were nice and always at hand with a smile. I had phenomenal pricing for the week and was more than satisfied for the fee I paid. I knew ahead of time regarding the street noise but the Seaview balcony was important to me so I gave it a shot and was glad I did. Book with confidence.
Nice hotel lobby and communal area very nice indeed. I stayed in a room with what they call gardenview. Anything but, there's a park opposite the driveway. Room dingy, small, dark, tiny window, air conditioning didn't work, luckily I didn't need it due to outside temperature. Room cleaning hitty missy, friendly though, but inconsistent. Overall staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfast very good though hot food not hot. Overall nice hotel, but don't get a gardenview.
Lovely hotel, great location and most of the staff are lovely. The exception is a very unpleasant and rude young man in a blue jumper waiting on at breakfast! I've visited the Magnolia for years and this encounter has now put me off returning.
Good value hotel in a great position. Nice rooms. Lots of choices at breakfast. Outside pool a bit cool (April) but small heated pool is brilliant. Easy walking either to lido area or Funchal centre. Lots of restaurants nearby. Wonderful staff - special mention to Jonny and the girls on the bar. This was our 3rd visit and we will return !
