Mulligan family stay
Arrived on Monday 19th family of four with two boys aged 15 & 17. Hotel looks very aesthetically pleasing from outside, some areas rather dated / not fit for purpose inside imho. Check in very friendly and efficient although hit with twice the tourist tax charge stated in my booking with love holidays, as I was advised it was per room and we had booked 2 rooms. Rooms are ok, nothing to rave about nothing to complain about. Beds very comfy, lots of storage and nice toiletries. We were informed of the hotel app which you have to book all inclusive restaurants through. On trying to book there was literally no availability for most of our weeks stay. Not a good start. Also informed you could only dine in each restaurant once per week. Guest relations did manage to squeeze us in some restaurants but in all honesty, it's clearly a farcical arrangement which is purely a cost cutting exercise. Non of the a la carte restaurants are fully, clearly running at most half of their occupancy. The only other evening option is the buffet restaurant, which as a vegetarian limits you to mostly salads and pasta, non of which are cooked to order / individual specification. Buffet restaurant not a fine dining experience, more like a school canteen! Very limited options. Drinks at the main bar of good quality but the service is very slow. Have to wait for the waitresses to deliver multiple orders to multiple tables. No blankets or heaters on outside balconies at main bar and it is certainly cool enough on evenings to require it. The indoor main bar is like a dingy old pub! Very limited entertainment. No poolside / beach drinks service. Honestly, given the reviews I'm very disappointed thus far. I'm a very experienced world wide traveller, and this trip was supposed to be a nice family break with no stresses re food options, as we are veggies and our boys aren't. However, this isn't the case. We can find things to eat but most meals at best a school canteen experience in the main restaurant, not what we envisaged. We were told most people book the restaurants weeks before coming , really ? Who wants to decide what they might want to eat or be stuck to a schedule weeks in advance ? Not me ! Not what we expected from Mitsis .
Excellent Late Season Stay
Mitsis Royal Mare: a great stay despite the weather
My husband and I had an amazing 10 days at the Mitsis Royal Mare. The first five days were rainy and cold, but we made the best of it and enjoyed beautiful weather for the last five. It was late in the season, so we knew the risk. The two questions I always ask myself are “would I return?” and “would I recommend it?”, and the answer to both is yes.
Room We originally booked a bungalow with a shared pool through Jet2holidays, then decided to upgrade to a suite with a shared pool. Jet2 quoted a ridiculous upgrade fee, so I emailed the hotel directly and got a much better deal, paid on arrival.
First impressions of the suite weren’t great. The room was dated and the shower cubicle was tiny, which was a struggle for my tall husband. The shared pool in Block 10 was one of the best on the resort, though. We asked at reception the next day and were told we could possibly move in two days. On the Friday we were shown a newly renovated room with a walk-in shower and a private pool. It was stunning, we took it, and it made our holiday. A big thank you to the reception and guest relations teams for sorting this out.
Dining Symposia is the main restaurant, serving buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner. Breakfast had a vast spread of breads, fruit, continental meats and cheeses, waffles, pancakes and yoghurts. The one disappointment was the egg station: no fresh omelettes (a holiday staple for me), just pre-cooked, folded ones, usually ham or cheese. Lunch and dinner offered a huge variety with something for everyone, and the staff were attentive with plenty of tables always available.
I’m not a big buffet fan, which is why I always choose hotels with at least three à la cartes, and the Royal Mare delivered. We tried them all several times, and by asking guest relations nicely we got extra bookings. You can pre-book on the app before you travel, which is well worth doing in high season.
Royal Palm (Asian): my favourite. Sushi, fried rice and noodles, in a beautiful setting just below the top pool. Allegra (Italian): lunch only, but still needs booking. We had two lunches here, and the pizzas and carbonara were especially good. Candia (Greek): usually has live music. I thoroughly enjoyed a beef dish. Pacifico: brunch and South American dinners. The Eggs Hollandaise, omelette, yoghurt and fruit at breakfast were all great, and the outdoor setting over the water is lovely.
We also had burgers at Albatros by the beach and waffles from the creperie next to Allegra. Special mentions to Manolis, Irene and Afrodite, who looked after us exceptionally well.
Bars Our favourite was Kalypso. Maria was always polite and smiling, and remembered our names from day one. The iced coffee in the morning, cocktails later and the always-refreshing Aperol Spritz were all excellent, and the beer was good too. The main bar off reception is dated inside, but the terrace is stunning, and we enjoyed expertly made martinis there before and after dinner. Special mention to Eleana, who was attentive and friendly.
Facilities I used the spa twice. It looks a little clinical, very white and blue, reminiscent of a hospital or public baths, but the treatments were very good. The gym is well equipped, and there’s a free indoor pool for when the weather isn’t great. We didn’t use the watersports or other facilities. The shops are good, with a well-stocked mini market and gift shops.
Extras Anna in guest relations sorted a lamp for our lounge, which had no soft lighting, and arranged extra reservations at Pacifico and Royal Palm. We also took a taxi into Hersonissos one evening for a change of scenery and had a lovely seafront meal. It’s €12 each way and worth the trip.
Verdict We would definitely return and are already planning to come back in 2028 for our 60th birthdays, with the family in tow.

I really love a Mitsis
Mitsis really know how to look after you. We had a lovely stay here from arrival to leaving. Thanks to Malita who sorted out my endless requests for A La Carte reservations to Anniversary Celebrations. The hotel is spotless and staff are fantastic. We really loved the food in all the restaurants, my favourite being the Royal Palm (Pan Asian).
